Dr. Alicia Mateos-Cárdenas works as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at University College Cork (Ireland). Mateos-Cárdenas holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science (2017–2020), during which time she gained expertise on the ecotoxicology of microplastic pollution, aquatic plants and freshwater crustaceans.
Her current main project, funded by the Irish Marine Institute, is looking at the abundance of microplastics and their associated chemicals in Irish deep sea coral habitats. She also manages two other plastic-related projects: an industry-funded project (Lyons Tea, Unilever) looking at the environmental fate of petroleum-based and plant-based teabags, and an NGO-funded project (Sustainable Ocean Alliance, SOA) in collaboration with Hombre y Territorio (HyT) monitoring microplastics in a nature reserve in southern Spain working with citizen scientists.
Mateos-Cárdenas is also particularly interested in science communication and sustainability matters. Beyond academia, she has experience as a volunteer in turtle conservation camps and environmental awareness campaigns in Cape Verde and the Galapagos Islands.
