Head of Department Marine Zoology, Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt
Professor Angelika Brandt studied biology and education at the University of Oldenburg. She became full professor at the University of Hamburg in 1995 at the Zoological Museum and curator of the Department Invertebrates II. Since 2003, she has either been deputy director or director of the Zoological Museum of the University of Hamburg. In 2017, she started at the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum and is the head of the Marine Zoology department and of the Crustacea and Ichthyology sections.
Brandt focuses on the systematics, ecology and evolution of peracarid crustaceans with a focus on Isopoda from deep-sea and polar habitats. As part of the Census of the Marine Life, she was involved in the Antarctic and deep-sea field projects CAML and CeDAMar. Her work documented the high levels of biodiversity of Southern Ocean deep-sea invertebrates. In recent years, her research interests have concentrated on the identification of drivers of evolution in the deep sea, such as dispersal barriers, as well as on advancing deep-sea sampling methodologies. She is active in deep-sea research NW Pacific and Southern Ocean but also interested in biodiversity of the World Oceans. She has joined or led 29 expeditions.
