Dr. Angelika Dummermuth is coordinator of the large-scale research infrastructure “Marine Stations Helgoland and Sylt” operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research. She holds a Ph.D. in Marine Biology and worked on UV-protection mechanisms and antioxidative properties of marine macroalgae. She took part in expeditions to Spitsbergen archipelago and is trained as a scientific diver. Science management and science communication has been her focus for the last 15 years, having served as public relations officer (2005–2008), personal assistant to the AWI director (2008–2017) and head of the directorates’ office (2013–2021).
As vice-president of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and coordinator of the research field Earth and Environment, Dummermuth’s primary tasks in support of the AWI director have been science strategy development as well as evaluations on the science management of boards and committees of the AWI and within the HGF. As a woman and mother in a scientific working environment, she is interested in the promotion of female scientists as well as achieving a gender balance in science.
