Anna Mandel

Visual and Performing Artist & CEO, DEEPWAVE e.V., Germany

Anna Mandel

Anna Mandel has been working for several decades in the field of visual and performing arts. Born and raised in (West) Berlin, she studied philosophy in Berlin and Tübingen and sculpture at the State Academy in Karlsruhe. She was part of the ensemble of Robert Wilson’s first production in Germany “Death Destruction and Detroit I” at the Schaubühne Berlin, played the lead role in Harun Farocki’s 1982 film “Etwas wird sichtbar”, a cinematic essay on the Vietnam War, and worked as assistant stage designer with Johannes Schütz at the Frankfurt Opera.

In her artistic work, Mandel uses sculpture, painting and drawing, installation and performance to explore the impact of human beings on the world in which we are guests. As a member of the German Synaesthesia Society, she is involved in international studies on mirror touch synaesthesia.

She has also raised two wonderful sons and is proud of their path to the future. In 2003 she co-founded, with her husband, deep sea biologist Onno Groß, the Marine Protection Organization DEEPWAVE e.V., for which she illustrated the Primer “Our Blue Planet – Yesterday Today Tomorrow”. Following his death in 2016, she continues his commitment to the oceans as the new CEO of DEEPWAVE
