Portrait Burkard Baschek

Professor Burkard Baschek is Director of the German Ocean Museum in Stralsund and is chair of the Safe Ocean expert group of the UN Ocean Decade opening conferences.

Baschek holds a professorship at Kiel University. He is a physical oceanographer with a focus on energetic coastal and small-scale processes and has developed several innovative observation systems and platforms, such as a swarm of artificial penguins and a towed instrument array. In 2016, he led the “Expedition Clockwork Ocean”, which used a zeppelin as a unique marine science observation platform. In order to share his fascination for the oceans with the public, he has produced two full-dome planetarium movies and is using immersive virtual and augmented reality applications for his own research and for effective communication with decision-makers.

Baschek holds a diploma in physical oceanography from Kiel University and a Ph.D. in Earth and Ocean Sciences. He received a postdoctoral fellowship at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and taught as an assistant professor at the University of California in Los Angeles, before accepting a position as institute head in coastal oceanography at the Helmholtz-Zentrum in Geesthacht, Germany.
