Postdoctoral Researcher at the Stockholm Resilience Centre
Dr. Guillermo Ortuño Crespo is a marine ecologist with an MSc from the University of St. Andrews in Ecosystem-based Management of Marine Systems and a doctorate in Marine Science & Conservation from Duke University. He specializes in the spatial ecology patterns of distribution of both pelagic species and fisheries in the open ocean to identify areas of high risk and opportunity for sustainable fishing.
Ortuño Crespo has been an active participant in the ongoing BBNJ negotiations, highlighting the importance of improving fisheries management, accounting for trans-boundary ecological connectivity and a wider use of dynamic spatial management tools as part of a new high seas treaty.
His postdoctoral work at the Stockholm Resilience Centre involves collaborating with the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission to develop the first ever tuna-RFMO dynamic spatial management strategy. He is also a member of the SeaBOS scientific team.
As part of his commitment to the UN Decade of Ocean Science, Ortuño Crespo is a member of the Early Career Ocean Professional initiative, which seeks to integrate the voices and expertise of the next generation of Ocean Professionals into the design and implementation of the Ocean Decade.
