Team Leader, Ocean Prediction and Monitoring, Pacific Community (SPC)
As head of the Ocean Prediction and Monitoring Team at the Pacific Community (SPC), Herve Damlamian serves as an interface between science and decision-makers. SPC is an international development organization owned and governed by its 26 Pacific Island countries and territories and it is the principal scientific and technical organization for the Pacific Region.
Damlamian joined SPC in 2005 as a numerical modeler and fell in love with the Pacific Island countries, its people (especially his wife!) and its cultural wealth, which he discovered while undertaking fieldwork throughout the region.
Early in his career, he was confronted with the impact of natural disasters while conducting post-disaster surveys. This profoundly shaped his professional development and boosted his motivation to develop scientific tools and knowledge to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities in the region. Over the last decade, Damlamian and his team have been working toward supporting risk-informed decision-making in the Pacific region, either through the delivery of probabilistic inundation hazard assessment or more recently through the development of regionally tailored, innovative inundation forecast systems.
