Isabella Lövin served in the Swedish government as a Minister of Development Cooperation and Minister of Environment and Climate between 2014 and 2021. She was also Deputy Prime Minister and Spokesperson of the Swedish Green Party between 2016 and 2021. Between 2009 and 2014 she was a member of the European Parliament and was a coordinator for the Greens in the Fisheries Committee, actively involved in the reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy, adopted in 2013. As a minister, she took the initiative together with the Prime Minister of Fiji to organize and host the first UN Ocean Conference, held in New York in June 2017.
Lövin holds an Honorary Doctorate from the World Maritime University for her work to protect the oceans and from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences for her efforts to focus on fishery issues in Sweden, as well as internationally.
Before she entered politics as a member of the Swedish Green Party she was an award-winning journalist focusing on culture and environment. She has published two books: Silent Seas – the Fish Race to the Bottom 2007 (on over-fishing in Europe), and very recently Oceankänslan – om behovet av en ny berättelse, 2022 (The Oceanic Feeling, not yet published in English).
