Professor of Deep-Sea Ecology at Plymouth University, UK
Kerry Howell is Professor of Deep-Sea Ecology at Plymouth University, UK. She has more than 20 years’ experience researching benthic faunal distribution patterns in the Atlantic deep sea. Her research is focused on mapping benthic biological communities to support sustainable management of the deep ocean, and integrating habitat maps into marine spatial planning processes, including marine protected area network design. She has expertise in image-based surveying of benthic ecosystems, including development of standards and the application of AI to image-based analysis. Howell has recorded incidental observations of litter in the deep sea since 2005. She has taken part in 18 international research cruises, including as chief scientist, all focused on North and South Atlantic and Indian Ocean deep-sea exploration. She is currently co-lead of the Challenger 150 Programme, a 10-year global program of deep-sea science for the Ocean Decade.
