Natalie Prinz is a Ph.D. candidate in marine ecology at the University of Waikato, where she also teaches. Her Ph.D. project is dedicated to the functional restoration of degraded estuarine sand flats using large, endemic shellfish. Prinz studied marine science in Western Australia followed by an international master’s degree in tropical marine ecology at the University of Bremen, Germany. She studied the ecological consequences of artificial feeding of tropical reef fish in the Cook Islands and the perception of local stakeholders on this practice.
Her professional experience spans from research on the RV Polarstern in the Arctic Ocean to working as a scientific diver in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. Prinz has received continued support from the German National Academic Foundation and was awarded the University of Bremen Campus Award by the Kellner&Stoll-Stiftung for her master’s project. She was the first All-Atlantic Ocean Youth Ambassador for Germany and is a founding member of the Youth4Ocean initiative. She is currently a committee member of the New Zealand Marine Sciences Society. Prinz believes that conscientious communication is key to empowering the young generation and transforming science into action.
