Dr. Ramasamy Venkatesan is Head of Ocean Observation Systems at NIOT India and holds a Ph.D. in marine pollution management. He was responsible for the Indian moored buoy network, including tsunami early warning systems, as part of the Arctic moored observatory. He was PI for the NOAA RAMA buoy program and served under the UNEP Regional Seas Programme.
Venkatesan holds a postgraduate diploma in maritime law and has 38 years of professional experience. Now, he serves as a Chair of GRA Council GOOS IOC; Vice Chair of WMO SG OOIS; member of the Steering Committee of GOOS; and Chair of the International Tsunameter Partnership, among others.
He has received many different awards, including the UN JCOMM Outstanding services certificate; Lockheed Martin Award National Geoscience Award; Fellow MTS; NACE Fellow; National Award from MoES and Chartered Marine Technologies; as well as a Guinness World Record. He has, to his credit, three patents; eleven products; three books; 135 papers; Fulbright Scholar at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, USA; Senate member and Syndicate member appointed by State Governor; Adjunct Professor Teaching Ocean Policy & Ocean Instrumentation.
