Ricardo Serrão Santos is Minister of the Sea of the XXII Government of Portugal and served as a Member of the European Parliament between 2014 and 2019. He was full member of the Committees of Fisheries and of Agriculture and Rural Development, and coordinator for the S&D Group within the Committee on Fisheries and vice-chair of the Intergroups SEArica and CCBSD.
Serrão Santos holds a doctoral degree from the University of Liverpool. He is a professor at the University of the Azores where he has also been Pro-Rector for Sea Affairs, Director of the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, and President of IMAR.
During his academic career, Serrão Santos coordinated and chaired several scientific organizations of the EU, Portugal and the Azores. He holds positions in several scientific advisory bodies and committees and has authored/co-authored more than 300 scientific papers and books.
Serrão Santos is a member of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences and emeritus member of the Portuguese Navy Academy. He has received several honorable mentions and awards, including a “Gift to the Earth” from WWF in 2002, and “Chevalier de l'Ordre de Saint Charles” from SAS Prince Albert II of Monaco in 2013.
