Torben Riehl

Research Scientist, Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt

Dr. Torben Riehl has been a junior research group leader at the Senckenberg Research Institute Frankfurt since 2017. His work is dedicated to species discovery at great ocean depths and explaining deep-sea biodiversity. As fellow of the Young Academy, Mainz, and the Johanna Quandt Young Academy, he engages in interdisciplinary discourse on topics of current societal relevance. Riehl received his Ph.D. from Hamburg University in 2014. For conducting doctoral studies at the Zoological Museum Hamburg and the Australian Museum in Sydney he was awarded a scholarship by the German National Academic Foundation and the Geddes Research Fellowship. Following on from his post-doctoral research projects at the Centre for Natural History Hamburg and Ghent University, Belgium, in his current position he links research with science communication.
Facing the Anthropocene biodiversity loss, Riehl believes it is essential to better understand roles and functions of the largest ecosystem – the deep sea – in the Earth system and to promote societal engagement. He spent over twelve months on research vessels during eight expeditions. He is published in over 50 scientific and popular articles, primarily on deep-sea crustaceans and biodiversity.
