Xianfeng Zhang

Dr. Xianfeng Zhang is a Professor at the Institute of Hydrobiology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since 1983, he has been engaged in research on the conservation of rare aquatic mammals, including the Baiji river dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer), the Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) and other marine cetaceans. He has also been involved in programs on: resources, ecology and the protection of rare aquatic organisms; aquarium science and technology; and science communication.

At the Institute, Zhang has served as both director and vice director of numerous research labs, centers and research business divisions. He is also the vice director or trustee of several academic associations, as well as a member of the Steering Committee of the International Aquarium Network. Zhang has published more than 50 scientific research papers and monographs, has been involved in the editions of 14 science education monographs and has issued over one million copies of his books in total. He has also been involved in the editions of six national aquarium industry standards and has worked as a consultant in the construction of aquariums, natural history museums and water theme parks in China.
